The Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of Maryland
School of Medicine supports both basic science and clinical research.
Investigators have published extensively in the fields of cerebral
resuscitation, public health, and bedside diagnosis. Research has
been published based on data from each of the three main clinical
sites: the University of Maryland, Mercy Medical Center, and the
Baltimore Veterans Administration Hospital.
The educational program provides research training for medical
students, residents, and junior faculty. Research mentors are available,
including some who have won significant funding.
Not all physicians are driven to do research, but earnest research
offers great rewards to those who pursue it. In addition to advancing
the specialty of emergency medicine, research teaches analytic
skills, offers opportunities for creativity, and increases enthusiasm
for clinical practice. Our department strives to offer as many
research opportunities as possible to those who are devoted to
it as a career component and to those who want to give it a try.
